Jabula means, Be Happy!  Dancers are exuding joy as they perform the dance, "Jabula".  My choreography for this dance embraces the West African Dance, "Pandogo".

Bio

Sharon Shakur, MA is an African American and Caribbean American Choreographer, Performer, Dance Educator and Arts Leader. She grew up in the Roxbury community of Boston, Massachusetts. Sharon was accepted to the renowned Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Upon completion of a double major in Film/Television Production and Computer Science, she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Sharon has choreographed, performed, and produced dance in venues throughout Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston. She has studied dance at Boston Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Roxbury Center for the Performing Arts, the Edge in Los Angeles, and California State University-Long Beach where she graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Dance Education. Sharon enjoys teaching various styles and levels of dance to students of all ages. She has taught dance at Los Angeles Southwest College, Pierce College, Brio Theatre, Roxbury Center for the Performing Arts, Los Angeles Unified School District, Cambridge Center for Adult Education, and Roxbury Community College (RCC). Also, she partners with the William Trotter K-8 School (Roxbury) and the Mather School (Fields Corner) to present a series of workshops titled Dance with Books®. Sharon is also involving her former RCC Dance Students in her new Dance Project titled “Converge: A Collection of Dances Created during the COVID 19 Pandemic and Racial Reckoning.” Sharon was chosen to serve on the Television Nominating Committee for the Screen Actors Guild Awards. She is a member of SAG-AFTRA and AEA. Also, she is a member of the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO).
